The Delta State Government has reiterated its commitment to advancing women’s rights and empowerment, marking the 2025 International Women’s Day with a strong call for gender equality and social inclusion.
At a well-attended event, the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community, and Social Development, Hon. (Evang.) Princess Pat A. Ajudua (Ph.D.), delivered a powerful address emphasizing the state’s dedication to creating an inclusive society where every woman and girl can thrive.
The theme of this year’s celebration, “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment, Accelerate Action,” underscored the urgency of taking decisive steps toward gender equity.
Delta State’s Commitment to Gender Equality
In her speech, Commissioner Ajudua highlighted the numerous strides the state has made in promoting gender equality under the leadership of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
She acknowledged the resilience and strength of women in Delta State, noting their critical roles in shaping families, economies, and governance.
“Women are the backbone of families and the driving force of economies. Their unwavering determination has shaped our communities, our state, and our nation.
From education to healthcare, politics to business, women have proven that when given opportunities, they can achieve extraordinary feats,” Ajudua stated.
She further emphasized the need for concrete policies to combat gender-based violence, improve access to education, and promote economic empowerment.
First Lady’s Initiatives for Women’s Advancement
Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, the First Lady of Delta State, was also praised for her efforts through the You Matter Charity Foundation, which has been instrumental in empowering women.
The foundation focuses on providing healthcare, financial independence, and protection from violence and discrimination.
“Through Her Excellency’s unwavering commitment, we have witnessed renewed efforts to uplift the dignity and status of women in Delta State.
Her initiatives align with our broader goal of fostering gender equality and economic empowerment,” the commissioner added.
Challenges and the Way Forward
Despite significant progress, Commissioner Ajudua acknowledged the persistent challenges women face, including gender-based violence and unequal access to opportunities.
She called for collective action from policymakers, civil society, and the public to break barriers and pave the way for future generations.
“While we celebrate our achievements, we must also recognize the work ahead.
“We must advocate for positive change, implement progressive policies, and ensure that every woman’s voice is heard and respected,” she asserted.
A Call to Action
The event concluded with a strong message of unity, urging women to embrace their power and uplift others.
Commissioner Ajudua encouraged women to continue breaking barriers and taking leadership roles in various sectors.
