The woman whose identity was not disclosed told the lawyer that her reason for not breastfeeding her one month old baby boy, was to prevent her breast from losing shape.
Barr. Amaka Onuoha, who expressed dismay, said she felt it was fiction until she witnessed the drama.
Said she: “Yesterday, I was shocked to my bone marrow, I did not know that such things still do happen!
“A client came with his business partner to draw out a Loan agreement this is because I advised him last week about that.
“However, I noticed he came with his wife and 1month plus baby, I knew his wife just gave birth but dragging her out for the agreement was what I did not get.
“When the agreement was ready and signed by both parties, the borrower left and my client stayed back with his baby and another conversation started.
The husband has spent money buying baby food in place of breastfeeding that the child would have enjoyed in the first three or six months of delivery.
According to her, all plea from the client for the wife to breastfeed the baby met brickwalls, snowballing into a near Court litigation.
Hear her: “He wanted to sue his wife for refusing to breast feed his son right from day one. He has pleaded and pleaded and it fell on deaf ears. My client has kept on buying milk and having read about the importance of breast milk, he now wants to drag the wife to court.
“I need to balance the whole scenario and when I asked madam to know why, I could even see the breast full. She said she does not want her breast to fall”.
The lawyer full of wisdom, though shocked, entered into a session with the wife to see reasons with her husband and breastfeed the baby.
“I was weak, I immediately searched through google to add to my own knowledge and started a counselling session, I had to tell my client to leave us to talk woman to woman.
“Happily at the end of the day, she agreed to give her baby breast milk. I softly insisted she gives him the first dose right in my office, she reluctantly agreed and when my client came in and saw this he was excited”, expressing further shock, whether such act still truly exist.
She called on others not to hesitate to help people not only through finance but also through words as so many are ignorant, under peer influence and some others under unexplainable situations.
