As Delta State continues to experience rapid urban development, the government has called for a state-wide positive action to mitigate the risks of flooding and other natural disasters.

The call comes after a heavy downpour that swept through parts of the state, affecting vehicles and motorcycles, particularly in Ika axis.

Speaking on the incident on Thursday April 3, 2025, the State Commissioner for Works and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu emphasized the importance of individual and community responsibility in flood prevention.

While efforts have been made to construct storm drains and improve drainage systems across the state, challenges persist due to human activities that obstruct water flow.

Proactive Government Measures on Flood Control

The state government has invested billions of naira in storm drainage projects in key areas such as Asaba, Ogbegonogo Market and Warri.

These projects are part of a long-term strategy to control flooding and ensure that roads remain passable during the rainy season.

Despite these efforts, Aniagwu, expressed concern over the increasing habit of residents dumping refuse into drainage channels.

Such actions, they warned, reduce the carrying capacity of the drains and contribute to flash floods, even in areas with adequate drainage infrastructure.

Citizens Urged to Take Responsibility

The Works, Rural and Riverine Roads, highlighted the role of individuals in supporting flood control measures.

“Many residents fail to take precautions during heavy rains, leaving vehicles and motorcycles exposed to rising floodwaters.

“Others continue to undermine drainage capacity by blocking water channels with debris”.

He also pointed out that rapid urbanization has intensified the flood risk.

“Areas that were once open spaces now have buildings, roads, and concrete pavements that prevent natural water absorption, leading to increased runoff into the streets”.

A Call for a Collective Approach

The government stressed the need for a more conscious approach to environmental management, urging residents to avoid dumping waste in drainage channels, relocate vehicles and valuables from flood-prone areas during heavy rains.

He said support government efforts to maintain and protect storm drains, report individuals or businesses obstructing water channels, and the administration reaffirmed its commitment to addressing flood challenges, citing past successful drainage projects and ongoing initiatives.

However, it emphasized that sustainable flood control requires cooperation from all residents.

As Delta State continues to grow, authorities believe that only a proactive, collective approach can prevent future flood disasters and protect lives and property.
