Residents and traders in Onitsha, Anambra State seemed to have come to live with what they termed “Cinema Robbery”, a brood daylight robbery without counter attack from the police and other security agencies.

It was as terrible to the point that once it is 6:00pm, people walk and live in fear of the unknown, attacks and possible robbery from Hoodlums who are on the waiting for their prey.

However, there is a quick turnaround as the activities of these hooligans knows no particular time,  as they rob in brood daylight with dangerous and sophisticated weapons unhindered.

The Story source who do not want the name on print, disclosed that on Saturday 6th February 2021, he was at Upper Iweka, Onitsha, from 6.00pm to 7.30pm to observe what residents called CINEMA ROBBERY.

According to him, that is watching a live robbery as if in a movie, “I trekked from the bridge to Eze Iweka or old Tarzan junction and from there to Peace Park and took Keke to City Biscuit or Mgbuka junction. I saw 7 robbery operations.

“The robbers are armed with daggers, irons and pistols. They took advantage of the traffic gridlock and move from one vehicle to another. They also robbed passengers inside some Keke.

“They moved in groups of either 4 or 6. Citizens like me were helpless as we truly agonizingly watched fellow humans robbed of their valuables. I was told that the other members of these gangs melt in the crowd and will attack any one that will challange these sons of the devil.

“No policeman or any other security was in sight. I heard that this is now a daily routine at Upper Iweka, some parts of Fagge and other parts of Onitsha. Some Keke drivers told me that the touts employed by mafia lords to collect illegal levies in all formats are also  fingered to be the robbers in the evening. Fagge zone is among the worst hit in rape cases and robbery cases.

The source accused the state governor, Mr. Willie Obiano, of relaxing when his house is on fire with the lives and property of citizens under threat on daily basis.

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Haruna Mohammed, said Onitsha is calm.

“The situation is very calm, the police are patroling 24 hours, we are making arrest and we have been charging them to court.

“Even today, we arrested armed robbery suspect in Keke and recovered gun there at Ugba. So, we have been arresting”, he said.
